Should I See My Dentist When I Have Braces?
The answer is YES! Dentists focus on the health of your teeth, and it is important to be checked for cavities and good brushing habits. We highly recommend that you continue to see your dentist every 6 months while in orthodontic treatment. At your orthodontic appointments, our focus is on your orthodontic health and the shifting of your teeth, not on cleaning your teeth. It is very important that you have a dental hygienist clean your teeth, especially since it is easier for food to get stuck in your teeth while wearing braces.
What Is The Difference Between a Dentist and an Orthodontist?
In dental school and post-graduate training at a dental college, dentists typically take one or two courses on the basics of orthodontics, but specialize in general oral health care. They are trained in tooth decay, gum health, and treatments like cleanings, fillings, crowns, teeth whitening, and veneers.
After dental school, however, an Orthodontist completes an additional two to three years of specialty training. This extra training teaches the skills needed to correct the bite, occlusion, and the straightness of teeth. While all Orthodontists are dentists, ONLY an Orthodontist has completed the training associated with more specialized care for mild to severe orthodontic problems.
